STABAT MATER
for small vocal ensemble and cello
The Stabat Mater is a longish Marian Hymn in Latin, dating back to the 13th century. It's a lovely, affecting text, all about the grief of the Virgin as she watches her son die on the cross. Also, it's super comfortable to set because the metre is really quite strict. It's been set hundreds of times, by real composers, over the last 800 years.

This is a much more ambitious piece for me. A performance lasts about 20 minutes. Lord knows if and when we'll be able to record it, so if you have a good cellist and 8 or 12 strong singers in your circle, get in touch with me and by all means have at it.

Note that this one will in all likelihood be revised a few times yet. Even though this is, I kid you not, my seventh or eighth go, and nothing here -- not a single note -- remains of the first version, which I started five years ago.
